How Long Does LASIK Take?
In most cases, LASIK surgery is completed within 15 minutes. However, there are a number of factors that will affect the length of your individual LASIK procedure.
The severity of your condition and the type of LASIK procedure best suited for correcting your problem will play a role in the duration of your procedure. The creation of the flap in the outer eye necessary to expose your cornea actually takes more time than the focal point of LASIK surgery, which is the reshaping of your cornea to restore your vision.
In traditional LASIK surgery, the flap is created using a microkeratome, a surgical tool with a small, oscillating blade. However, for some patients—such as those with thin corneas—bladeless LASIK may be recommended. Depending on the procedure, creation of the corneal flap may take 30 seconds to a couple minutes.
Once the flap allowing access to the cornea has been created, the reshaping of your corneas may take only about one minute per eye.
It’s important to remember that while the LASIK procedure itself is brief, there are some pre-surgical preparations necessary and occasionally a short in-office recovery period is recommended depending on your individual condition. The entire procedure typically takes between one and two hours.
