LASEK and LASIK are both laser vision correction procedures. Both LASEK and LASIK can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Both are able to be safely and quickly performed in our comfortable Bay area office in about 15 minutes, and both can produce remarkably clear vision. This is what they have in common, but the difference is more than just a letter.

LASIK

LASIK is ideal for patients with thicker cornea tissue and small to moderate sized pupils. With LASIK, a flap is created in your cornea at 50 microns, and does not go below the top layer of corneal tissue. Due to the minimal size of the flap, recovery from LASIK can be as quick as 24 hours. With LASIK, corneal haze is extremely rare, and most patients experience 20/20 vision or better after one surgery.

LASEK

LASEK may be a better option for patients with insufficient corneal tissue to support a LASIK flap. With LASEK, the corneal flap is cut to a thickness of 100-180 microns and involves both the top and middle layer of corneal tissue. Recovery from LASEK can take four or more days, and clear vision may not be achieved until six to eight weeks. LASEK is less likely to cause dry eye syndrome than LASIK, and may be a better solution for patients with a history of this disorder.

The truth is, no single option is going to be suited to every patient.
