Questions About Visian™ ICLs
There are two types of phakic intraocular lenses (P-IOL) available for correction of nearsightedness (myopia), especially more severe degrees of myopia. One is placed in front of the iris (between the iris and the cornea.) The other, the Visian™ ICL is placed behind the iris, (between the iris and the natural crystalline lens.)
What is the Visian™ ICL?
The Visian™ Implantable Collamer Lens is a biocompatible implantable lens that is made of collagen and is compatible with human tissue. Because of its collagen and polymer compound makeup it repels proteins that might otherwise cloud its surface, and allows it to produce clearer vision than other materials.
Is the Visian™ ICL Better Than LASIK?
P-IOLs have the capability of correction high degrees of myopia while producing fewer higher-order aberrations than LASIK. But beyond a certain point they may not achieve a full 20/40 correction. Each procedure has advantages and disadvantages over the other so it is best to discuss these with your eye surgeon to find out which procedure will give you the better results. Dr. Gary Kawesch is committed to giving the highest quality care to you. His extensive experience with both procedures assures you that he will determine the better choice for you.
How Long Does the Visian™ ICL Procedure and Recovery Take?
Each eye will be implanted in separate outpatient visits. The actual procedure takes only about 15 minutes. You should arrange to have someone drive you home, as your vision might be blurry for a few hours, initially. After a one or two day recovery period you should be able to return to work and normal activities.
If you would like to learn more about the Visian™ ICL implant solution for your myopia please contact Dr. Gary Kawesch at Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley providing laser surgery in San Jose, Pleasanton, Oakland and San Francisco, California.
