Questions About Monovision LASIK

For those of you who just cannot wait for your personal consultation for monovision LASIK, here are a few answers to some common questions about this procedure. Be sure to follow the links as each one will lead you to more information about both LASIK this revolutionary treatment that frees you from glasses as presbyopia develops.

How Does Monovision LASIK Work?

Presbyopia occurs because with age the crystalline lens begins to lose the flexibility it needs to refocus quickly and fully between reading range to distance range. It tends to lose more near vision capacity than distance vision causing people to need reading glasses. Monovision LASIK works by correcting just one eye for clear reading vision, leaving the other to see distances.

Is Monovision LASIK Permanent?

All laser surgery, including LASIK, is permanent, allowing you to enjoy glasses-free vision for many years from one quick procedure. Other methods of achieving monovision are temporary, such as CK, contact lenses, or intraocular lens implants, although the latter can be reversed with additional surgery.

Will Monovision LASIK Treat Cataracts?

No. Cataracts, another age-related disease, result from clouding of the natural lens. Cataracts are not curable but refractive lens exchange (RLE) will restore clear vision for cataract patients.

Does Monovision LASIK Treat Any Other Disorders?

While monovision LASIK could be used to correct other refractive errors, it is a preferred method for treating presbyopia rather than refractive error that affects younger eyes. Best results come from evaluating each patient’s unique vision correction needs. The eye surgeons at Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley will make sure they give you the most appropriate recommendation for your best vision results.
