Do You Need to See an Ophthalmologist?

When you need professional eye care your choices of provider types are limited but confusing. Do you need to see an ophthalmologist or an optometrist? The answer depends upon why you need care. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in medical treatment and surgery of the eye. Optometrists are not medical doctors, and can treat far fewer disorders.

Corrective Lenses, LASIK or P-IOL Implants

If your vision is losing clarity, especially if you are in your early 40s, you would probably do as well seeing either provider. Both offer eye exams and lens prescription services.

However, laser surgery and P-IOL implants offer freedom from glasses or contact lenses. Ophthalmologists, such as Dr. Gary Kawesch and his associates at Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley, are trained in eye surgery, LASIK and other refractive error correction surgery treatments.

Deciding Factors in Choosing an Ophthalmologist

But the real question is, do you know, with certainty, that an eye exam and prescription is all you need? Could you possibility have underlying eye disease or health problems, like diabetes, high blood pressure or a parasitic eye disease, that could be causing or contributing to your problem? If so, you must see an ophthalmologist.

To schedule your no-cost consultation with an experienced ophthalmologist please contact Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley with offices in San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and Pleasanton, California.
