Choosing your LASIK Surgeon
Not all LASIK surgeons are created equal. Therefore, it is important to do your research when choosing a LASIK doctor. The skill and experience of your surgeon can greatly impact the outcome of your procedure.
A great way to begin your search is by asking for referrals from people you trust. This can include your regular eye care physician as well as friends and family members who have undergone LASIK. Your eye care practitioner should be able to steer you towards some of the most accomplished LASIK surgeons in the area, and discussing prior experiences with friends and family members can provide you with significant insight about the procedure. If you receive a recommendation from someone who was absolutely thrilled with the outcome of the procedure, you may want to schedule a consultation with that surgeon.
Credentials are also very important. You should always look for a board certified ophthalmologist. Board certification with the American Board of Ophthalmology demonstrates that the surgeon has undergone years of in-depth training in the field and has passed comprehensive exams which indicate excellence in the area of specialization.
Your initial consultation is also a great place to get a better feel for your prospective LASIK doctor. You will have the opportunity to ask the surgeon questions about his skills, background, and ability. Do not be afraid to ask difficult questions, and make sure you are satisfied with the answers you receive.
Some important questions to ask include:
- How many procedures have you performed? (Your surgeon should have extensive experience performing the exact same procedure you require)
- What is your complication rate and how does it compare with other surgeons?
- If a LASIK complication arises, how do you handle the situation?
- Do you charge extra if an enhancement procedure is required?
- What kind of LASIK technology do you use?
- Have you ever faced a medical malpractice claim?
If for any reason you are not comfortable with a surgeon after the initial consultation, do not work with him. Continue your search until you find a doctor you trust.
