Verisyse™ Intraocular Lens (IOL)
Not everyone is an ideal candidate for LASIK. There are many reasons why this procedure may not be the most effective way to correct the refractive errors in your vision. Fortunately, there are a variety of alternative vision correction options available to you. One of these options is the Verisyse™ intraocular lens (IOL). At your initial consultation, San Francisco ophthalmologist Dr. Gary Kawesch will perform a comprehensive eye examination to determine whether the Verisyse IOL is right for you.
The Verisyse lens is a phakic IOL. This means your eye’s natural crystalline lens will not be removed when the IOL is inserted. Instead, you will have the benefit of an additional lens helping to focus light on your retina. This is a very valuable benefit, since your eye’s natural crystalline lens is responsible for adjusting between near and far objects.
The procedure is very safe and can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthetic. It will take approximately 15-30 minutes to complete.
Dr. Kawesch will place an incision in your cornea. The Verisyse IOL will be inserted through the incision and placed in between your iris and cornea. Once the lens is centered in front of your pupil, Dr. Kawesch will attach it to the iris in order to ensure it remains in place. For the first few days of the healing process, you will need to wear a protective shield over your eye to prevent infection.
The Verisyse IOL yields very successful results. About 90% of all patients achieve vision of 20/30 or better following the procedure. As a result, you will most likely not need to wear glasses or contact lenses anymore.
