Monovision LASIK

Sometimes described as a work-around for a condition called presbyopia, monovision LASIK corrects the vision in one eye for distance vision, while correcting the other for near vision. Presbyopia is a condition that you will likely experience around age 40 and it literally means "old eyes." When you begin to hold your newspaper at arms length, or move back in order to read your computer screen, you should be examined to determine if you suffer from presbyopia.

Just because you have presbyopia, does not mean you cannot undergo LASIK vision correction. LASIK typically corrects the vision in both eyes for distance vision. The eye surgeon cuts a microscopically thin flap of your cornea and reshapes the eye with one of a number of types of lasers. This helps the eye to refract, or bend, light onto the retina for good focusing. In some cases, when you correct for distance vision, you may still need reading glasses for your near vision problems caused by presbyopia.

With monovision LASIK, the eye surgeon fixes your dominant eye for distance vision, but leaves or makes minor corrections on the non dominant eye so you can see close up. If you are considering undergoing monovision LASIK, Dr. Kawesch may have you try monovision contacts for a few months first, to see if you tolerate it well. Many people experience problems and cannot get used to adjusting to the changes in their vision.
