LASIK and Wavefront-Guided Technology
Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, LASIK, has earned a reputation as the method of choice for eliminating glasses and contact lenses and their accompanying hassles. Since its introduction in the last part of the 20th Century, millions of people have benefited from LASIK vision correction surgery. Every year, the lasers, techniques, and surgeons improve, making the procedure safer and more effective than ever.
During the procedure, Dr. Kawesch may use one of a number of advanced lasers for which he is qualified, depending on your specific needs. In most cases, a standard excimer laser is used to reshape the underlying cornea. But if you have astigmatism or other eye conditions that require more precision, the laser can be used in conjunction with Wavefront guided technology. This allows the doctor to plan the new landscape of your eye precisely to account for any wrinkles or abnormalities.
First, a flap is created from the outside layer of the cornea and the underlying corneal material reshaped to help refract the light to the retina for proper focusing. In some cases, one eye is corrected for distance vision, while the other is left alone, or corrected for near vision. This is known as monovision LASIK and is used to help treat presbyopia as well as myopia.
If you are looking to eliminate your glasses or contact lenses, please contact the Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley, which serves Palo Alto and other surrounding areas, to schedule an initial consultation.
