Contact Lens Risks
Estimates show that more than 30 million people wear contact lenses in the United States. These thin plastic disks that rest on the cornea of the eye have given people around the world a chance to reduce their need for glasses. While contact lenses have offered wearers a chance to enjoy activities that glasses restrict, the lenses also have created a few problems.
Those who wear contact lenses are at greater risk of injury to their eyes and for contracting infections related to the eyes. To prevent eye injury and illness, you should work closely with an eye doctor, like those at Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley in Northern California to understand the best practices in wearing contact lenses, in order to prevent eye injury.
Problems Connected with Contact Lens Use
Due to the increased risks of contact lenses, some eye patients find that LASIK surgical procedures counter those risks and yet provide the same level of vision without the daily routine of inserting and taking out contacts. The most common injuries and illnesses related to contact lens wear include:
- Corneal ulceration – more common in soft contact lens wearer due to their comfort level and potential for overnight use
- Corneal abrasion – more common in hard contact lenses, but even soft contact lenses are at increased risk
- Infections of the corneal – these can be fungal or bacterial in nature and have the potential for vision loss
If you are concerned about the potential risks of contact lenses and want to consider what LASIK could do for you, please contact our office today. The Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley staff can help you understand more about LASIK surgery and the alternative it provides to contact lens wearers.
